Off to the theatre

I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I was a theatre major in college. I'm not sure if I believed back then that I would ever be able to make a living by singing and tap dancing, but I guess it seemed like a good choice at the time. Once I got out of college I did professional theatre and opera for a while, worked on a couple of cruise ships, even did some theme park work. It was fun. I saw the world. But as much as I loved it, I had a greater need in life. I wanted to settle down and have a child. And so while all of my friends were going on to do Broadway and Las Vegas shows, I was settling in Miami and getting ready to adopt LO.

I can't lie. I miss it. I miss the lights. I miss the sound of the applause. I miss the rush of being in front of an audience. But I wouldn't trade my life with LO for it.

PHD and I are going to the theatre to see Wicked tonight. Tickets were incredibly hard to get but we somehow managed to get orchestra center seats. I'm thrilled because nowadays I have to get my "theatre fix" by sitting in the audience instead of being on stage. It's not quite the same but you have to admit, there's nothing quite like live theatre.

I have heard good things about Wicked.

I saw the show last December on Broadway... my cheeks hurt from smiling when I left! The music is surprisingly complex (especially for a Stephen Schwartz show) and it's a great show visually, too. I read the book after I saw the show - totally different and worth the read, too! Enjoy!

I love live theater. There's nothing like it.

Let us know how you liked it - my brother and sister-in-law saw it a few weeks ago and have had the soundtrack playing in their house nonstop ever since!

It was FABULOUS. And I agree with BN, the music is complex. Coming from a musical theatre background, I couldn't help but think that throughtout the show. It must be a hard score to sing.

RM - Our house is just like your brother's - we've had the soundtrack playing ever since as well.

Oh did it make me miss performing (sigh).

Orie- "popular" is a REALLY tough song to sing. If you need proof just google "Jessie's bat mitzvah" to see a poor 12 year old girl try to do it. It is pretty awful.

I read the book, but have yet to make it to the show, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. Then again, the last show I saw was Avenue Q, and I thought that that was hilarious.

I love Wicked! When I was still in high school (a couple of years ago) we sand "Defying Gravity" and "For Good" in our mixed show choir and "Popular" in our all-girls group. How I miss performing, too!

The closest I get these days is participating in the Jewish a cappella choir on campus and the occasional karaoke night!

This weekend my younger brother was at a national show choir competition, and I went with my parents to watch him. It was great seeing him on stage, but it also made me wish I was still performing. Maybe someday...

I was looking for something new to read, and after searching a bit to see what "Wicked" was, I found the book in the local library and am already getting into it. Thanks!
