Diamonds are NOT my best friend

As you all know, our engagement had not been the usual run of the mill engagement. (Nothing in my life has ever been "usual" so I guess this plays right into the way things should be!) There was no ring. There was no getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him. There was no romantic dinner. And it's all good - I think it's sweeter that when my father came to visit us, PHD asked him for my hand in marriage. In any case, as the date draws nearer, we have started to talk about rings.

This is the part that I hate. I wish he would just go and get one and give it to me. I hate to make decisions. The only thing we agreed upon together was that we would purchase everything in Israel. So - we've got the diamond from a cousin in Israel who is a diamond dealer and now we I have to figure out what we I want to do with it. White gold? Yellow gold? Diamonds on the side? Plain diamond? Ugh. Too many choices. If you had to pick from these, which would you pick? I am SO OPEN for suggestions.

here's a really great little jewelry store in the ben yehuda area - I think it's called turquoise, but I might be wrong - anyway, they sell the most lovely rings - lots of different styles, including my faves, mixed metals (yellow, pink and white gold) in various combos. They do beautiful work I recommend them. It's right near where the yemenite restaurant used to be (sigh, why can't I remember the name of the place?)
I don't know if they do custom work, but if they don't buy your wedding ring there, anyway, and forget about the diamond. Diamonds are totally overrated. My engagement ring is onyx.

Go try on rings during your lunch hour one day... or bring LO on a Sunday. That way, when you get to Israel you'll know: Does platinum or yellow gold look better against your skin? How broad a band can you wear? How high do you want the stone set (it can snag on things if too high)? If you have those basics in mind, then shopping with PHD will be fun in Israel!

What about a cigar wrapper. ;)

My rings are mixed - platinum and gold. I have a floatig setting, which I like, too. I agree with Babka - go with what looks good against your skin tone.

I am such a creature of habit, so the one I'm drawn to is the one on the right (white gold or plat) - it is similar to my own. I don't see as much yellow gold and diamond combo jewelry nowadays, but I do think it's a classic too, so if that's your preference, I think they are both pretty.

Being that you mentioned that LO helped bring you guys together, I think taking LO to look at rings together and to get her input into a style is a great idea.

I don't know, Gila - that's on the territory of asking older kids to help choose a new baby's name - do you really plan to totally go with their choices?

KRG - I put it on my list and hopefully will find it while I am there. Can;t ever have too much jewelry ;)

BN and Gila - LO likes anything that is as she says "sparkly" so I doubt she would be much help. But I still think it would be fun to see what she might pick out!

Jack - Hmmm - maybe that's why you've been married 11 times. Heh heh.

AMM - You know I never thought about a combination.

RM - I didn't see many in yellow gold but I do love the "classic-ness" of it.

I am a yellow gold girl. My ring is a 2 carat white sapphire with two 1/2 carat pink sapphires alongside...and the "head" is a crown. It's gorgeous...we designed it ourselves. Maybe something like that would work for you two?

Yellow gold is back! My yellow gold diamond ring was dipped white gold a few years ago... I'm thinking of stripping the white gold off.. Can a person sell gold dust?

I like them both. Yeah, I know, not much help. Given your skin tone you really can pull off both of them (you lucky lady!). The reason for that is you have olive skin but you are neither "warm" nor "cool" in your complexion (work with me here, i do makeup and hair for a living lol ;-)). so basically you have the option of picking whatever tickles your fancy. i would also recommend trying on rings to see what looks best on your hand as far as size and shape goes. for instance, i can't wear round stones because my fingers are short and i need something that makes them look longer, which can be done best by pear, princess, and emerald-cut stones. marquis and round/brilliant cut stones flatter fingers that may be a bit on the broader side. heart shaped diamonds look good on just about everyone, though aren't very common for rings. good luck in your search!
